Jul 14, 2015 at 20:23 | comment | added | 201044 | Have Buddhist or Hindu philosophers ever written any non-complicated arguments against atheism for an 'average' person?
Mar 26, 2015 at 2:11 | comment | added | 201044 | Why is the concept of not existing after death much more reasonable than the idea of existing after death ( for some academics)?
Mar 26, 2015 at 2:07 | comment | added | 201044 | Does skepticism as a philosophy ever analyse itself for possible errors or deficiencies or with regard to what can be improved?
Feb 14, 2015 at 6:34 | comment | added | 201044 | Is there a skeptical way of analysing atheism or agnosticism or materialism?
Dec 30, 2014 at 7:02 | comment | added | 201044 | Can skepticism be applied to the concept of a finite existence? If we are 'thinking' being like Descartes said (I think) in that we are ALWAYS thinking or feeling or cognitively active in some way then we are like a self-generating dynamic information management systems that is always active. Like a speeding car zooming through a 'cognitive landscape' that is HARD to stop. So maybe such an energetic system that is always active yet suddenly is stopped can be skeptically analysed?
Dec 24, 2014 at 7:33 | comment | added | 201044 | Can skepticism be applied to any philosophical position or set of ideas even if the ideas being analysed are considered by many academics to be true or 'probably' true? Isn't a good test of the 'truth-worthiness' of a set of ideas actually trying to disprove them or skeptically analyse them in an objective way?
Dec 20, 2014 at 1:37 | comment | added | 201044 | What I mean is, are there any non-religious or non-christian writers or philosophers that 'look' at Atheism and agnosticism from a critical point of view ( in light of what robert bristow-johnson said); that the 'viewpoint' of atheism and agnosticism may be wrong?

Dec 18, 2014 at 13:41 | comment | added | robert bristow-johnson | "Are we considering a question any more pertinent than any other application of epistemology?" no, not really. it's just that the OP appears to be looking for an author who isn't a religious apologist who is taking on the assumptions (whether they be justified or not) that atheists make. that seems like a slightly different spin on the issue.
Dec 18, 2014 at 13:38 | comment | added | robert bristow-johnson | "Is it similarly a philosophical position to believe, within the context of a technical education, that there are no perpetual motion machines,...?" ya, sorta. i have to confess that i have too much of a religious axe to grind (nor am i a published author in such) to answer the OP's original concern.
Dec 18, 2014 at 8:12 | comment | added | Niel de Beaudrap | @robert: To play Devil's Advocate (so to speak): what is "atheism as a philosophical position"? Is it similarly a philosophical position to believe, within the context of a technical education, that there are no perpetual motion machines, and that antimatter exists? Are we considering a question any more pertinent than any other application of epistemology?

Dec 17, 2014 at 22:31 | comment | added | Joseph Weissman♦ | It almost sounds like you are asking for theology rather than philosophy -- is there any chance I might be able to persuade you to draw this out a little further? It will help optimize the chances of getting a great answer if you explore the context and motivations of the problem you're encountering (and even just paraphrasing yourself a few times can help ensure that potential answerers can clearly understand what exactly it is you would like an explanation regarding.)
Dec 17, 2014 at 21:06 | comment | added | robert bristow-johnson | i think Paul is wondering if there are authors, without a religious axe to grind, that can (and do) critically analyze Atheism as a philosophical position. i've always thunk that such folk may be what we call "Agnostic".
Dec 17, 2014 at 17:03 | comment | added | Niel de Beaudrap | Perhaps you might describe what you mean by "sceptical" or "analyse", unless you're happy to hear about philosophical advocates of atheism — that doesn't sound like what you're looking for, but what sort of thing are you looking for?
