Usually there are only three possible motivations for punishment: deterrence, education, and revenge. When someone infringes on my rights, it is very possible that I have no desire to educate this person (because I don't care enough about them), and no need to deter them (because they won't be in a position to hurt me again in the future), and no desire for revenge (because revenge is neither emotionally satisfying nor rationally useful to me). | |
