What influence did Kant have on artistic modernism? I'm not even sure if his concept of taste is anti-modernist, and have read nothing explicitly on this question.

  • According to Greenberg, a champion of American modernism, the influence was seminal:"I identify Modernism with the intensification, almost the exacerbation, of this self-critical tendency that began with the philosopher Kant. Because he was the first to criticize the means itself of criticism, I conceive of Kant as the first real Modernist." See Pissaro's essay and Hicks' short survey Kant and modern art. – Conifold Jul 26 '20 at 2:52
