Feb 24 at 19:42 comment added cmaster - reinstate monica @Speakpigeon Btw, the Einstein Problem (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einstein_problem) was solved by an amateur last year...
Feb 24 at 19:33 comment added cmaster - reinstate monica @Speakpigeon Well, it does happen. At the very least, students do correct their own professors when they make a mistake on their slides. That's low hanging fruits as these errors are firmly within the area that the students are actively digesting. Nevertheless, it is quite a cool experience for the student involved. Because the only thing that matters to a mathematician is the validity of an argument, not who raises it.
Feb 24 at 17:15 comment added Speakpigeon @cmaster-reinstatemonica "look up each and every one of the terms that they do not know yet" Yes, exactly, but what does not come out in what you say is that very many proofs relies on more basic proofs, each one involving yet more vocabulary to understand. So, in principle, may be, but in practice, very rarely, if ever.

Feb 24 at 13:15 comment added cmaster - reinstate monica @Speakpigeon Ok. I should have added "in principle". The problem is, that advanced proofs tend to use advanced terminology that's taken to be known by the reader. An undergrad student would need to look up each and every one of the terms that they do not know yet, and check whether the things that the proof does with these terms are all valid. Nevertheless, once they have done this work thoroughly (and thus become more proficient themselves) they will be able to point to any error they found and say "this is wrong because ..." with confidence.
