If the logic teacher was trying to show the limits of propositional or sentential logic, then he did a really bad job given that he left the OP with the impression that "formal logic is unsuitable for philosophical reasoning". All that was done is to demonstrate that the English-language interpretation of q | s | !p | !r is misleading when translated into implications. If you don't want to end up confused about what the sentence actually means, then you use first-order / quantificational logic where you see the problem explicitly.
